The gaming industry has been a tempting target for cybercriminals who are looking to make quick money. The online gaming industry is expected to reach $200 billion in revenue by 2023, and attackers are certainly looking to grab a huge chunk out of this booming space.

Recent attacks on the gaming industry

In the last two months, several cyberattacks were leveled against the online gaming industry. Most of these attacks are aimed at stealing gaming accounts, credentials, and other sensitive information.
  • In a recent update, CD Projekt Red stated that its source code and internal data were leaked due to an attack in February.
  • Electronic Arts (EA) was hacked and attackers claimed to have stolen 750 GB of data. The data was found to be available for sale online.
  • AMT Games had accidentally leaked nearly six million player profiles for the Battle for the Galaxy game. The incident happened due to the misconfiguration of a cloud database.
  • In February, a user on a popular hacking forum was selling a database that contained more than 257,000 user records from Orakulas, the Lithuania-based online betting service.

Phishing and other threats

In addition to data theft and leak, cybercriminals have been observed to be using other types of attacks as well.
  • Researchers discovered Minecraft mod packs and a file recovery utility app on the Google Play store concealing malicious adware. These apps turn users’ smartphones into intrusive advertising tools.
  • Last month, a new type of phishing attempt was discovered that used a well-known gaming platform Steam. The attacker used a fake Steam URL to steal user credentials.

Conclusion

Attackers continue to target the rapidly proliferating online gaming industry. Therefore, gaming organizations and gamers are recommended to develop proactive strategies to ensure the protection of their information and systems. Moreover, prioritizing security hygiene is an important step for better protection from such threats.
