Brazilian cryptocurrency trading platform Atlas Quantum recently suffered a data breach that exposed the personal details of over 261,000 customers. The firm became aware of the breach on August 25 and is currently investigating the incident.

“We became aware early on Saturday night that a security incident involving the leakage of data from our customers occurred. We are conducting an investigation with our information security advisor to understand the incident in more detail and we will cooperate with the appropriate authorities” Atlas Quantum said in an official announcement on its Facebook page.

Sensitive data leaked

According to ‘Have I Been Pwned’, the compromised information contains names, phone numbers, email addresses and account balances of customers. The firm confirmed that its entire database was exposed in the incident and that it has taken immediate steps to prevent further leakage of information.

“We would like to point out that this is not a steal of bitcoins in custody or violation of our accounts in the exchanges. However, our customer base was exposed. At the time of the incident, we took immediate steps to protect the database and passwords and private keys remain encrypted” Atlas Quantum added.

The firm said its investigation team is monitoring the affected accounts and, as a precaution, some platform features have been temporarily disabled. Atlas Quantum will notify users as soon as the features are enabled. The company is all also working towards enhancing its security measures to protect its customers against such incidents in the future.

It is not yet clear whether data breach was caused by cybercriminals accessing the networks or the company left its database unprotected. It is also yet to be known if any data has been misused. The firm is working closely with information security advisor to figure out the motive and reason behind this hack.
