Exploring a New Reference Architecture for Industrial Control Systems Security (Expert Blogs and Opinion)

We Need a New Framework for Thinking About ICS and Critical Infrastructure Network Security As it relates to threats targeting industrial control systems (ICS) and critical infrastructure networks, it should be completely clear that “the times – they are a changing.” We have entered a new era over the past 6 months – demonstrated by the collateral damage caused by WannaCry and NotPetya, and even more clearly by the deliberate and alarming targeting of the widely used Schneider Electric Triconex safety platform by the Triton malware. ● A strategy of “security zones” within ICS networks – which has never really been implemented in most ICS environments which typically have flat networks because it was too difficult/expensive to segment We need a new framework for thinking about ICS and critical infrastructure network security. ● Total visibility as a foundational element – tools that can show us the entire ICS network, including fieldbus and serial communication – the lowest layers of ICS networks
