Global Malware Volumes Escalate First Time in Three Years
SonicWall released its mid-year update of the 2022 Cyber Threat report, based on the analysis of one million security sensors across 200 countries, along with third-party sources. Let’s go through the statistics delivered by the report.

  • SonicWall recorded 2.8 billion malware hits globally, in H1 2022, marking an 11% rise over 2021. This amounts to an average of 8,240 malware attempts per target. This is the first recorded rise in three years.
  • The rise in global malware has mainly been attributed to the rise in IoT and cryptojacking malware, at 77% and 30%, respectively.
  • Malware volume in Asia surged by 32%, followed by Europe at 29%. 
  • A major increase of 132% has been attributed to the rise in encrypted threats that evade detection. 
  • The researchers observed 270,228 never-seen-before malware variants, which is a 45% increase since 2021.

  • Kaspersky discovered a new UEFI rootkit variant, CosmicStrand, used by Chinese hackers. The malware is found on ASUS and Gigabyte motherboards. 
  • QBot can now use the Windows 7 Calculator by spoofing as a legitimate app. This technique is used to conduct DLL side-loading attacks. 
  • A Linux malware, dubbed Lightning Framework, was spotted. The malware can backdoor devices using SSH and deploy various kinds of rootkits.
