JFJ Eyecare Ltd., that does business as Quantum Vision Centers and Eye Surgery Center LLC has announced a security breach of its systems. The incident has caused some of its systems being accessed by hackers.

What happened?

According to a press release, Quantum Vision Centers and Eye Surgery Center has revealed that it became aware of the incident on April 18, 2019. The eyecare firm said that the hackers had deployed malware on some of its systems and encrypted certain files. This includes some files on a server that contained patient protected health information.

What data is involved?

The types of data affected in the incident may include first and last name, date of birth, address, social security number and information relating to health insurance coverage.

Meanwhile, there is no evidence if the hackers have stolen the data. “There is currently no evidence that suggests this malware incident actually resulted in the acquisition of any personal information beyond its encryption, but that possibility cannot be conclusively ruled out,” the company stated, InvisionMag reported.

How did the company respond?

Quantum Vision Centers and Eye Surgery Center LLC has taken several remedial steps to contain the attack and prevent the malware from spreading further. This includes engaging a third-party forensics firm to investigate the matter and deploying backup measures to recover the lost data.

The firm continues to provide services to patients with limited interruption. In addition, it is also providing one-year credit monitoring services for free to the affected individuals.

Quantum Vision Centers and Eye Surgery Center has urged its users to remain vigilant over the coming months and regularly monitor their bank and other financial account statements as well as their credit report.
