Unprotected Database Exposes Private Data of Over 41 Million Online Gamblers Including 3.3 Million Thai Citizens

• ThaiCERT has warned Thailand’s online gamblers that their personal information has been exposed due to an unprotected database.
• The exposed information includes names, phone numbers, birthdays, ID card numbers, and bank account numbers.

What’s the matter?

Thailand Computer Security Coordination Center (ThaiCERT) has warned Thailand’s online gamblers that their personal information has been exposed due to an unprotected database.

What happened?

On August 15, 2019, ThaiCERT, ETDA, and a department in the Ministry of Digital for Economy and Society learned that Thai personal information has been found in foreign database systems of gambling websites.

Upon which, ThaiCERT examined the leaky database and found out that the database holds the personal information of over 41 million individuals including 3.3 million Thai citizens.

What was exposed?

The exposed information includes names, phone numbers, birthdays, ID card numbers, and bank account numbers.

What actions are being taken?

• ThaiCERT has coordinated with the government’s Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA) in order to secure the leaky database and stop the distribution of the exposed information.
• It is also working closely with the Bank of Thailand and TB-CERT (Thai Banking Sector CERT) to reduce the risk and damage that may occur from the data exposure.
