Application Attacks Witnessed a Surge with Remote Working
As organizations had to make a rapid shift to remote working in 2020, cybersecurity took a back seat. This further boosted the increase in app-specific and web app attacks.

Some stats your way

As per the NTT 2021 Global Threat Intelligence Report web application and application-specific attacks accounted for 67% of attacks in 2020. The data has been collected from January 1, 2020, to December 30, 2020.
  • App-specific attacks, web app attacks, and reconnaissance activity made up 87% of all activity last year.
  • The finance sector was the worst impacted by these attacks with app-specific and web app attacks accounting for 73% of all attacks.
  • These were the top two attack modes in the Americas at 56%. Moreover, these two attacks combinedly made up 98% of all malicious activities on the healthcare sector in EMEA.

What else?

  • Cryptominers accounted for 41% of all detected malware, thus, replacing spyware.
  • While healthcare was most impacted by RATs, worms had a free reign in the manufacturing and finance sectors. However, the technology sector was plagued by ransomware.

More statistics

Verizon DBIR provides an overview of basic web application attacks. Some of the statistics observed include
  • The year witnessed 4,862 incidents, among which 1,384 had confirmed data disclosure.
  • Web app vector was utilized to compromise mail servers, of which 96% were cloud-based.

Latest incidents

  • A newly discovered DNS bug, dubbed TsuNAME, can be used as an amplification vector in massive DDoS attacks.
  • A huge DDoS attack shut down the Belgium government’s websites and impacted internal networks and police services.
  • Ukrainian security and defense websites were attacked by Russian cyber actors in a massive wave of DDoS attacks.

The bottom line

The rate of attacks has far exceeded the rate of recovery. Cybercriminals have become more sophisticated and with the shift to remote working, the attack surface has drastically increased. Hence, organizations are advised to invest in resilient cyber technologies to achieve success against cyber threats.
