Ragnar Locker Ransomware Targets Belgian Police, By Mistake

Ragnar Locker Ransomware Targets Belgian Police, By Mistake
Ransomware gangs have become braver, stronger, and sharper, which is clearly evident from their attacks. Recently, the notorious Ragnar Locker ransomware group targeted a Belgian municipality, however, there’s a little twist.

Diving into details

Ragnar Locker ransomware group published the stolen data from what it believed to be the municipality of Zwijndrecht, Belgium, but it turned out to be from Zwijndrecht police.
  • The leaked data includes thousands of crime report files, car number plates, investigation reports, fines, and other personnel information.
  • Reportedly, the Ragnar Locker ransomware attacked a poorly secured Citrix endpoint to breach into the police network.

Why this matters

While the ransomware attack didn’t affect the Belgian national police network, the breach on the local network impacted thousands.
  • According to Belgian media outlets, this Ragnar Locker ransomware attack is one of the biggest that has ever impacted a public service in Belgium, compromising all data stored by the police from 2006 to September 2022.
  • The leaked files, furthermore, contained child abuse pictures and footage from traffic cameras.

The bottom line

It is recommended that the victims change everything they can, including passports, license plates, and ID cards. This is the largest and most impactful attack on Belgian law-enforcement by a ransomware group.
